WHAT IS JAZZ?

AGES 6+

Jazz dance is a lively and expressive dance form with roots in African American culture and influences from ballet, modern dance, and tap. Emerging in the early 20th century, it quickly gained popularity for its energetic and rhythmic style, showcased in dance halls and on Broadway. Pioneers like Jack Cole, Bob Fosse, and Katherine Dunham have greatly contributed to its evolution, making jazz dance a versatile and dynamic art form.

At the School of Dance, our mission is to help students grow as performing artists and dancers by focusing on the joy and creativity of jazz dance, free from the pressure of competitions. We provide a supportive environment that honors the rich history of jazz dance while emphasizing technical proficiency, performance quality, and individual expression. Our goal is to cultivate a love for dance and foster the artistic development of each student.

WHAT IS TAP?

AGES 6+

Tap dance is a dynamic and percussive dance style where dancers strike the floor with their feet to create intricate rhythms and melodies. Wearing shoes with metal plates on the toes and heels, dancers produce a distinctive, sharp sound that serves as a form of percussion. Tap can be performed either with or without musical accompaniment, and when paired with music, dancers often synchronize their movements to the beat, creating mesmerizing choreography.

Recognized as a theatrical art form, tap dance is frequently showcased on stage and in musicals. It has its roots in mid-1800s America, particularly in the Five Points neighborhood of New York City. By the early 1900s, tap dance had gained widespread popularity, with legendary performers like Bill "Bojangles" Robinson leading the way.
